How well does flagship hardware age in the long-run?

Just as the case with the past years, and despite the calamitous threat of the deadly Coronavirus causing GSMA to call off this year’s MWC, many of the tech companies have unveiled their latest addition to the lineups of their flagship smartphones. But as we drool over the rapid advancements in network speeds and processing power introduced to us every year, it still remains a tough task to guess whether these new smartphones will stand the test of time and prove to be a reliable option a year or two down the road. With the news of my Essential PH-1 will no longer receive official support, I thought it might be the best time to conduct a little experiment to deduce how well do older flagship smartphones stand the test of time.

[Update: Rollout halted] OxygenOS 5.0.1 update released for the OnePlus 3 and 3T

OnePlus 3T

OnePlus was undeniably among the quickest to update their devices to Android Oreo via its Open Beta program. However, those who couldn’t wrap their heads around the beta program were obliged to hold on to last year’s sweet until the official update is released, especially if you weren’t quick enough to install the last OxygenOS 5.0 update before it gets silently pulled. Today, OnePlus decided to end that wait and release the official Oreo update for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T, perhaps as an early New Year’s Eve gift.

Paranoid Android and OnePlus 3 review

On May 31st, Paranoid Android for the OnePlus 3 was released after a long line of tweets and test builds. Bemused by the hype, I decided to take a further look. I’ve never really used AOSPA, but the perplexing nature of an entirely different Android version attracted me. I was impressed, but to give you an idea of the nature of this article and what my opinions will be, I am no longer using it.

OxygenOS Nougat Update

Back in November, when the OnePlus 3T launched, OnePlus’ co-founder, Carl Pei, stated in their forums that the Nougat update would come to both the OnePlus 3 and the OnePlus 3T “later in the year.” But with OnePlus’ fame for unfulfilled promises, it came as a surprise to many that on the last day of 2016, the Nougat update was rolling out to nearly all devices.
