Motorola announces the Moto Z2 Force, here’s everything you need to know

Motorola’s indestructible smartphone is back. At the #HelloMotoWorld event today, the company took the wraps off the Moto Z2 Force, their latest and greatest flagship phone. But the newest generation comes with some shiny new things and, of course, some compromises.

Specs

It’s a 2017 flagship, and it’s specced as such. However, here’s a rundown:

  • 5.5-inch QHD AMOLED display
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 835
  • 4GB/6GB of RAM
  • 64GB/128GB storage
  • 8MP Front Camera
  • Dual 12MP rear cameras
  • 2,750mAh battery
  • USB Type-C with fast charge
  • FPC1035 front-facing fingerprint sensor
  • Android 7.1.1 Nougat, promised Android 8.0 upgrade

Display and internals

On this aspect, you can find the expected generation jump. The phone retains the 5.5-inch QHD display from its predecessor while upgrading the internals. Unlike its predecessor, the Z2 Force is powered by an SD835 processor coupled with either 4 or 6 GB of RAM. It includes a front facing fingerprint sensor and 64GB/128GB storage options. Have in mind that the 128GB/6GB model is the global one, and it’s sadly not available in the US.

However, Motorola’s quest for a slimmer phone means that the newest generation, like the previous Z, doesn’t have a headphone jack. It’s an increasing trend that sadly looks to be unstoppable by now. Like its predecessor, it also has a USB Type-C port.

Camera

The Moto Z2 Force is the first Motorola phone to push forward a dual camera setup. It uses a 12MP monochrome sensor coupled with a regular 12MP sensor like Huawei did with the P10. However, it’s not the only Moto phone to do it, as the rumored G5S+ is rumored to feature the same sensor. Unlike its predecessor’s 5MP front facing camera, the Z2 has a much better 8MP sensor.

Battery

The slimmer, 6mm phone also got a battery downgrade. The hefty 3500mAh battery included with the Z Force was swapped for a much more conservative 2750mAh pack. The 835 processor barely sips energy, but still, battery life is going to be affected by Moto’s move. Let’s remember that Moto did the same with the Z2 Play, successor to a phone critically acclaimed for its battery life. However, this is likely a move to promote their battery mods.

Price

For the first time around Moto decided to ditch their Droid brand and Verizon exclusivity, and the Z2 Force is available on all 4 major US carriers. Still, it’s a flagship phone with flagship prices. As such, this time around it’s priced at a nice $720. And if you go for other carriers like AT&T, you’ll find prices like $810.

That wraps up the newest Moto product launch. Stay tuned as we might have a full review soon. Are you excited for it? Leave your thoughts below.
