Xiaomi created one of the first “bezel-less” phones with the Mi MIX, and now it’s building on that with its Xiaomi Mi MIX 2, which is being showcased in a concept video by the designer himself, Philipe Starck.
The Mi MIX kick-started a trend in the smartphone industry of cutting down on bezel sizes, leading to the near non-existent bezels of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and LG G6, along with the upcoming Essential Phone. It appears that the successor to the Mi MIX will blow the competition out of the water in terms of bezel sizes: there’s just a tiny sliver of bezel at the top, with no unsightly camera spot, and with bottom bezels thinner than the Galaxy S8.
The camera appears to be in the same place as before, which, in my opinion, is much better than the fiasco found on the (rumored) iPhone 8 and Essential Phone.
While all concept videos should be taken with some skepticism, remember that this comes from the designer of Xiaomi’s Mi MIX. If the concept turns into a reality, the market will be overturned again.
There’s no indication if Xiaomi will make this available to US consumers, but our fingers are crossed!
