Carl Pei teases Face Unlock for OnePlus 3/3T

OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei has let out a cryptic tweet asking OnePlus 3 and 3T users to “make [themselves] heard” about getting Face Unlock on their devices.

Earlier this year, OnePlus debuted the OnePlus 5T, which was a significant upgrade from the OnePlus 5, sporting beefed up specs along with an 18:9 aspect ratio display on board. Another feature that came with this device was the ability to unlock the phone with your face. This feature has been a part of stock Android over a long time, but OnePlus seems to have made algorithmic improvements to the face detection model that is used to improve speed and accuracy.

This launch was met with backlash from owners of the OnePlus 5 who felt left out on the action. Later, OnePlus announced that the feature would be backported to the OnePlus 5 as well. This didn’t stop owners of the OnePlus 3 and 3T to rally behind a cause to get this feature on their device as well.

You can already use Google’s baked in face unlock if you don’t want to wait. For what it’s worth, it works fine and gets the job done. However, it is definitely not the fastest or the most secure way to unlock your phone as it can be easily fooled by a picture of you.

Google’s “Smart Lock”

Now, it seems like OnePlus has decided they are going to add this feature to their older flagships as well. What is interesting is that Carl would never make this tweet unless they have this planned, since OnePlus relies on user’s hyping of features on social media for promotion. Regardless, it’s an overall win-win scenario for the end users of the OnePlus 3 and 3T.
