[Update: Rollout halted] OxygenOS 5.0.1 update released for the OnePlus 3 and 3T

OnePlus was undeniably among the quickest to update their devices to Android Oreo via its Open Beta program. However, those who couldn’t wrap their heads around the beta program were obliged to hold on to last year’s sweet until the official update is released, especially if you weren’t quick enough to install the last OxygenOS 5.0 update before it gets silently pulled. Today, OnePlus decided to end that wait and release the official Oreo update for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T, perhaps as an early New Year’s Eve gift.

Update 1/1: It appears OnePlus has halted the rollout of 5.0.1.

With a major Android version upgrade to Android 8.0 Oreo, this update does have a considerable changelog. For starters, this update adds support for the new Picture-in-Picture mode, where supported apps can be minimised into a small floating window that you can drag while performing other activities without being too intrusive. Despite the list of supported apps being a bit small, it can be quite convenient when being put into action with apps like YouTube and Chrome. Moreover, there have been some new features added to the blend, such as support for the aptx HD Bluetooth codec, a new WiFi Hotspot Manager and a new “Adaptive mode” screen calibration – a feature the OnePlus 5T used to boast exclusively. Other changes include some changes to the UI elements and performance enhancements, as well as an update to the bundled security patch.

Here’s the detailed changelog of the (pulled) OxygenOS 5.0 update:

System

  • Update to Android O (8.0)
  • Added Parallel Apps
  • Added Picture in Picture
  • Added Auto-fill
  • Added Smart text selection
  • New Quick Settings design
  • Updated security patch to September

Launcher

  • Added notification dots
  • New app folder design
  • Now able to upload photos directly to Shot on OnePlus

Here’s the detailed changelog bundled with the new OxygenOS 5.0.1 update:

System

  • Added support for aptX HD
  • Added Wi-Fi hotspot device manager
  • Added “adaptive mode” screen calibration
  • Updated Android security patch to December
  • General bug fixes and stability improvements

Graciously, OnePlus opted for including the last released security patch this time around. The OTA update is slowly rolling out to all OnePlus 3 and 3T users, with Canadian users reported to be the first to receive the update (wink wink). In other news, OnePlus continues to impress its customers by listening to their requests and teasing the addition of the newly released Face Unlock feature in a future update. Update 1/1: The rollout has been halted after many users reported a warning from Google Play Protect for the system app “FactoryMode.” The rollout will be resumed on the January 3rd.
