More than a year after its initial release, Google Home still doesn’t support independent volume levels for Assistant and music

Like me and many others, you probably use your Google Home for ambient music a lot. Volume level 2-4 is perfect for this, however, then you need to ask your Google Home a question, only to have it respond back to you at volume level 2.

As Reddit user I-take-beast-shits (lol) put it:

“In order to hear a question I have for google while playing music I need to perform the following:

  • ‘Hey google stop’
  • ‘Hey google set your volume to 7′
  • ‘Hey google [insert question here]’
  • ‘Ok google set volume to 5’
  • ‘Ok google play my [insert playlist]'”

Or Redditor huntmol:

“It’s really annoying to have a group of people over with low background music playing, ask Google Home a question, and have it whisper back an answer at volume level 2.”

The Google Home family

Aside from multiple Reddit threads that I scanned, Google’s own Product Forums have users voicing their request to add this. Unfortunately, the only forum that I found was created in early December 2016 and is since locked with 1464 views and 110 upvotes. A user responded to it saying that they have submitted feedback through the Google Home app and “encourage all users desiring this enhancement to do the same.” Well, I’ve submitted multiple feedback reports and so have several others, but, well over a year past the Google Home’s initial release, my Google Home and my Google Home Mini still don’t support this much-needed feature.

I’ve never owned any Echos or Alexa-enabled products, but, after doing some research, this is also something that Alexa currently lacks. So, Google, if you want to get another “one-up” here on Amazon in the smart speaker industry, make your move.
