Google Fit gets a material refresh and some new features

Google is rolling out a redesigned Google Fit app. It comes with the new Material Theme with all its clean and bright colors as well as two new features: move minutes and heart points.

Move minutes and heart points

“Move minutes” is a better version of step tracking since it can capture several different activities like dancing and yoga. It can motivate you to make small, healthy changes throughout your day, instead of the usual 8000 steps a day. For example, it could tell you to take the stairs instead of the elevator.

“Heart points” is designed to get your heart pumping harder for better health benefits. You’ll get one point for each minute of moderate activity, like picking up the pace while walking your dog, and double points for more intense activities like running or even kickboxing.

The redesign

Google’s been slowly rolling its material redesign out to all its apps. After Phone, Contacts, Duo, and Messages, Fit gets the redesign. The redesign has a cleaner overall look. Everything’s bright and white, and the old bitmaps are gone.

There are three sections: Home, Journal, and Profile. The “Home” page shows a circular overview of your move minutes and heart points. Below that you can find your steps, calories burnt, and distance covered. The “Journal” page keeps track of your activities over time. The “Profile” page is where your personal information like weight, height, gender, birth date, and goals can be entered. You can also access settings from there.

Integration with other apps

Google Fit also integrates with other fitness apps like Strava, Runkeeper, Endomondo, and MyFitnessPal. There’s still no integration with Fitbit, however, but that’s likely due to Fitbit wanting to manage all your health and fitness data and to increase competition with Google.

How can I get the update?

Google’s rolling out the update this week. But if you’re impatient like me, you can just head over to APKMirror and download and install the updated APK.
