Chrome OS will soon let you install Linux applications right from the launcher

Linux support in beta on Chrome OS reached the stable channel just last year, and it’s made the operating system so much more productive. Today, a commit on the Chromium Gerrit was discovered that will add an even easier way to install Linux apps on Chrome OS.

The bug tracker description reads, “Add APT search into Chrome OS App Launcher, so that uninstalled Linux packages and Apps can be searched for and installed via the App launcher.” The feature isn’t live on the Canary built just yet, but the flag will be called #crostini-app-search when it launches.

What this means is that soon, a simple search for “GIMP” or “Eclipse” in the launcher will grab results from the APT archive and display an “install” button next to them.
