Three new Chromebooks for 2020 unveiled at CES

At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this week, Samsung, Lenovo, and ASUS all unveiled new Chrome OS devices all in different form-factors.

Samsung Galaxy Chromebook

When the product name contains the word “Galaxy,” you know this is going to be a premium device. It’s the thinnest Chromebook ever and comes in two colors: an eye-catchy “Fiesta Red” and “Mercury Gray.” There’s also a built-in stylus.

Performance-wise, this thing is probably the fastest Chromebook ever made: 10th-gen Intel Core (U-Series) processor, NVMe SSD storage up to 1TB, and up to 16GB of RAM.

The display is where things are particularly interesting, however. It’s a 4K 13.3-inch AMOLED with 3840 x 2160 resolution (16:9). It supports Ambient EQ with HDR400 support on the way.

Other additions include Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5, and a fingerprint scanner. It’s a convertible device and includes an additional camera on the keyboard side for rear-facing shots, in case you ever wanted that. It’s not cheap, though, and starts at $999 for a Core i5, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage.

It’s easy to see how many are referring to this as the “original Pixelbook successor,” given its price tag and excellent specs. A Chromebook like this with a U-series processor will definitely make for a smoother user experience, especially for those using Linux apps on Chrome OS. The Galaxy Chromebook will be available for purchase in the US by the end of March.

Lenovo IdeaPad Duet Chromebook

The IdeaPad Duet Chromebook is 2-in-1 detachable with a 10.1-inch screen, and it comes with the keyboard and backstand in the surprisingly low $279 price tag.

It’s got a MediaTek Helio P60T ARM processor inside it, which should make using Android apps smooth enough. The screen is 1920 x 1200 resolution (16:10) and 400 nits of brightness. It’s also got 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage.

The IdeaPad Duet Chromebook will be available for purchase beginning in May.

ASUS Chromebook Flip C436

The C436 is essentially going to be a slightly cheaper Galaxy Chromebook that’s just as good. It’s a convertible with a 14-inch screen of 1920×1080 resolution (16:9). It also comes with 10th-gen Intel Core i3/i5/i7 processors, 8GB/16GB of RAM, and 128GB/256GB/512GB of storage.

There’s Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5, a fingerprint scanner, and a built-in Harman Kardon quad-speaker setup. No price point is set yet but it’ll be available in early March.
