Why custom ROM users are quick to dump OxygenOS

Back in November of last year, we discussed how Android 9 Pie on the OnePlus 6 differed from that on the Pixel 2 XL, which can be regarded as nearly stock AOSP. While there might be little to no difference at first glance, a closer look reveals that such a claim couldn’t be more wrong. Not only does OxygenOS offer more features that enrich the functionality of the phone, but it does also have some noticeable design alterations. This lightly-skinned version of Android Pie might appeal to the overwhelming majority of users. However, quite a lot of the tech-enthusiasts feel like being left in the dark following this mindset transition, myself considered. So what is it that makes the die-hard custom ROM enthusiasts dump OxygenOS in a heartbeat and flash a custom ROM on their phones? Well, without further ado, let’s dive in and find out.

Stock Android 9 Pie vs. OxygenOS Pie comparison: Which is better?

Android Pie hasn’t even made a dent in Android’s distribution numbers despite Google, Essential, and OnePlus being the first manufacturers to offer it. Google and Essential rolled out very close-to-stock versions of Android Pie, but OnePlus changed a bit of the UI and added some of their own additional features. Did OnePlus make this release of Pie better than Google? Or did they eat our Pie just as they had eaten our Oreo? Let’s find out.

OnePlus, don’t eat my Oreo!

Last October, OnePlus shook the Android enthusiasts community with a weird, but pleasant gesture, by releasing an Oreo-based Open Beta build for last year’s flagship devices, the OnePlus 3 and the OnePlus 3T, followed by an official stable update in late November, just a couple of weeks ago, making OnePlus the first (sort of) company to upgrade their devices to the new Oreo platform. While a lot of the OnePlus 5 discerning owners were left baffled, it was very satisfying and refreshing to see OnePlus striving to upgrade its devices as soon as they could, and sure enough that did put a smile on their fans’ faces, till they updated to the latest stable version, OxygenOS 5.0.

OxygenOS Nougat Update

Back in November, when the OnePlus 3T launched, OnePlus’ co-founder, Carl Pei, stated in their forums that the Nougat update would come to both the OnePlus 3 and the OnePlus 3T “later in the year.” But with OnePlus’ fame for unfulfilled promises, it came as a surprise to many that on the last day of 2016, the Nougat update was rolling out to nearly all devices.
