Google might remove Voice Match unlocking on Android devices

If you want to unlock your Android device with your voice, Google allows you to with Voice Match. Simply saying “Ok Google” can unlock and give you access to the Google Assistant. However, it’s less secure than a passcode or fingerprint and a similar voice or a recording of your voice could unlock your device and give somebody total access to your device. Google’s now removing it and replacing it with “Lock screen personal results.”

Google doesn’t allow Voice Match to unlock the Pixel 3 and 3 XL. Instead, Voice Match can only show emails, the calendar, and contacts through the Assistant interface, but any further action will require a password or fingerprint unlock.

According to 9to5Google’s Google app v8.39 teardown, the Google app will display a dialog box saying that Voice Match has been replaced with a more secure way to get personal results while your device is locked. This hints at the Pixel 3’s “Lock screen personal results.”

It’s a more secure way of using the Google Assistant on the lock screen and probably what Google should’ve done in the first place. It’s not yet enabled on Google app v8.39 and might take effect on future versions.
