Google unveils “In-app updates API” to bring faster and more seamless app updates

Today, at the Android Dev Summit, Google unveiled a new API, aptly named “In-app updates API,” which can be used by developers to update their apps while they are running.

The company is making it easier for app developers to implement version checking into their apps with a simple API.

The In-app updates API in action

This API will provide you with two options. The first is a full-screen experience for critical updates when you expect the user to wait for the update to be applied immediately. The second option is a flexible update, which means the user can keep using the app while the update is downloaded. You can completely customize the update flow so it feels like part of your app.

So far, this API is being tested with a few developers, but it is expected to roll out to all developers once testing is completed.
