Google will retire the notifications widget on March 7th

You’ve probably noticed the tiny bell icon next to your profile picture before on many of the Google services you use on the web. However, beginning March 7th of this year, it will disappear.

The notifications widget has served as the home to Google Photos, Google+, Hangouts Chat, and YouTube (in the past) notifications. However, given that Google+ is soon being killed and Hangouts Chat is currently available for G Suite customers only, the widget probably has a low usage rate, which is the likely reason for its elimination.

Google advises that if you want to receive notifications in the future, you should “update the notification settings for your individual Google products.”
