Instagram for Android finally targets 7.1 and adds an adaptive icon

For the longest time ever, the official Instagram app for Android only targeted Android 6.0 Marshmallow and didn’t include an adaptive icon (aka round app icon). Finally, that’s changing.

The change to target Android 7.1 actually rolled out to the stable build in app version 52.0.0.8.83. Instagram is slowly updating its app to comply with Google’s upcoming Play Store requirements. By August 1st, all new apps published on the Google Play Store must target Android 8.0, and by November 1st, all app updates must target 8.0. And the policy updates every year, so by August 1st, 2019, all new apps must target Android 9.0.

Moreover, Instagram’s latest alpha release (v55.0.0.0.33) brings a long overdue adaptive icon. If you’re not on the alpha and can’t wait to round your Instagram app icon, you can download the new build from APK Mirror.
