Google expands its Android Enterprise Recommended program to rugged devices

Android has always had an update problem. Google is trying to fix it with Project Treble and it’s worked out well so far. However, it still remains a concern for large businesses who don’t want security flaws. For them, Google launched an Android Enterprise Recommended program that guarantees at least three years of security updates. Today, Google expanded the program for rugged devices used in field services, warehouses, retail stores, and manufacturing plants.

The differences

For devices under the Android Enterprise Recommended program, monthly updates must be released within 90 days of Google releasing them, and this support must continue for three years. The requirements for rugged devices are slightly different, however.

The device must be running Android 7.0 (Nougat) or above, have at least 2GB RAM, and have more than 16GB storage. It must also have an IP rating of IP64 and has to survive repeated drops on concrete from a height of four feet. They’re also guaranteed to have security updates for a whopping five years.

Supported devices

The devices—which you’ve probably never heard of—in the program are:

  • Zebra TC25, TC51, TC56, TC70X, and TC75X
  • Honeywell CT40, CT60, and CN80
  • Sonim XP8
  • Point Mobile PM45
  • Datalogic Memor 10 (launching in October)
