Weekend Poll: What percentage of your apps target an older version of Android?

With Google’s recent Play Store policy mandating that all new apps published to the Play Store and all app updates target at least Android 8.0, I’m curious as to how many of the apps installed on your primary device target an older Android version (or API). To find out, there’s a nifty app on the Play Store that lets you do so.

First, you’ll want to install “AppChecker” from the Play Store. What this app does is display the TargetAPI of all your installed apps. After opening up the app, you’ll be greeted by a list of all your installed apps along with the respective Android version they target. Tap the 3 dot menu in the upper-right-hand corner of the app and open the “Statistics” screen. It should look something like this:

The Statistics screen.

Tapping on each section also tells me that I have 8 Google apps installed that don’t meet their own policies: AdSense (N), Hangouts (N), Measure (N), PhotoScan (N), Voice (N), Authenticator (M), Opinion Rewards (M), and Trusted Contacts (M).

Now, for the poll below, here’s what we want you to do. Add up the app target percentage of each Android version before Oreo. So, for example, in my case, I would add up 9.7% for Nougat, 5.8% for Marshmallow, and 4.9% for Lollipop to get a combined total of 20.4%. This tells me roughly 20% of my installed apps target an older Android version.

Do the same by voting in the poll below for your percentage and feel free to sound off in the comments below what you think.
