Android’s sharing menu will finally be redesigned and be much faster

The share menu on Android has always been a nightmare. With every Android update, including Pie, there’s been no major change. It takes time to load, it’s bloated with apps, and is one of the most inconsistent experiences on Android to date. Finally, Google is working on a redesign.

We’ve all experienced this: you tap the share button, it takes forever to load, the menu comes up, and exactly when you tap the icon you want, the row moves. You end up accidentally clicking on someone else in the suggestions. And then, your bathroom selfie gets shared with your grandma.

VP of engineering for Android at Google, David Burke, confirmed on Twitter that fixing the Android sharing menu is “a priority” in response to complaints about how slow it is. He said that fixing the Android sharing menu is a “big job” and that Google is working on redesigning this portion of the interface with the goal of making it “faster and nicer to use.”

Android indexes apps to share each time the menu is called upon. It basically looks for them every time; it doesn’t cache them. This redesign will be accomplished by changing the underlying data model to push data to the menu versus having the menu pull that data when the user goes to share.

We don’t know when we’re going to see this change, though. Android 9 Pie hasn’t even made it to Android’s distribution numbers, and it’s likely that it’ll be rolled out in Android 9.1 or Android Q.
