Google might skip Android 9.1 Pie maintenance release

Android Pie came out only a month ago and we’re already getting information about the next release. According to a report from XDA-Developers, Google might skip its maintenance release of Android Pie.

Google typically releases a new flavor of Android every year in August. This is followed by a maintenance release sometime in December. In maintenance releases, Google brings a new API for developers to use in their apps. For example, after Android 8.0, 8.1 brought a neural networks API for machine learning.

The API level identifies the version of Android you’re running. For example, Android 8.0 is API Level 26, 8.1 is 27, and 9.0 is 28. The document revealed that the next version of Android, Android Q, will be API level 29. This means that instead of Android 9.1, Android 10.0 will be API Level 29.

This doesn’t mean that Google will skip the maintenance release. We may still see a maintenance release without an API level change. However, we’ll have to wait and see what happens.
