The Play Store’s Material Theme redesign is coming soon, and here’s how it looks

Google has been redesigning its apps one by one to match its new Material Theme. A few months back, Gmail and G Suite received a Material makeover. Now’s the time for the app that really needs it: the Play Store. The redesign isn’t out yet, but 9to5Google was able to forcefully enable it.

To start off, gone is the old cartoony vibe. This redesign makes it look so much more polished and clean. There’s now a bottom navigation bar for Home, Games, Movies & TV, and Books. Each of them features a Material Theme icon that has a hollow interior and bold outlines. When selected, they’re themed in their respective green, red, or blue accent color.

The tab for Music has been shifted into the navigation drawer. Because of the bottom bar, the Play Store no longer needs its old nested tabs. Now, the only tab on the top is for sections like For You, Top Charts, Categories, Editors’ Choice, etc.

The app info page has also been redesigned. Apps that aren’t installed feature a full-width install button with more rounded corners. App categories and other labels have been moved below the screenshots and app description. When you install an app, the download progress indicator is no longer a straight line but is circular and around the app icon.

The “My apps & games” screen features new tabs where sections like Updates and Installed are not fully uppercased a̶n̶d̶ s̶h̶o̶u̶t̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶a̶t̶ ̶y̶o̶u̶. The old light gray line separators are gone, giving it a clean look.

Sadly, the redesign isn’t rolling out right now. These are only early images that 9to5Google was able to get by forcefully enabling it. The theme is still in development and it’s hard to say when it will roll out to users, but it may be soon.
