Android is switching from desserts to numbers and getting a new brand look

Over a decade has passed since the first version of Android was released to the public. Many things have happened since then, but today, the Android brand is changing.

Gone are the desserts

Google’s done away with the desserts. Android Q is officially just Android 10. While not being able to find a suitable dessert name might have contributed to the change, Google’s reasoning is somewhat justifiable:

“[Android] L and R are not distinguishable when spoken in some languages. So when some people heard us say Android Lollipop out loud, it wasn’t intuitively clear that it referred to the version after KitKat. It’s even harder for new Android users, who are unfamiliar with the naming convention, to understand if their phone is running the latest version. We also know that pies are not a dessert in some places, and that marshmallows, while delicious, are not a popular treat in many parts of the world.”

So at version 10 and 2.5 billion active devices, Google’s moving to just numbers now to reflect the globality of the operating system.

A new look for the brand

The logo for Android has also gone through some design changes. For one, the bugdroid (the Android robot) is now part of the logo; however, the body’s disappeared! It seems that Google’s gone for the head this time.

The colors are also tweaked. The text has gone from green to black, and the robot has switched to an even brighter green.

With these changes, you can probably expect the final release of Android 10 to be very near now.
