Android 10 is official

Right on cue on the 3rd of September, Google is now rolling out the next version of Android: Android 10. That’s right, gone are the desserts. This release is designed to make your life easier with features like on-device machine learning, better privacy and security controls, gesture navigation, dark mode, and more. Let’s take a look at the top new features in Android 10.

Gesture navigation

Gestures are here with Android 10, and they’re pretty intuitive, in my opinion. The pill works pretty much the same as on iOS, but for going back, you swipe in from either edge.

Dark theme

Google, give us that dark Gmail and Search!

Android 10 features a native dark mode. When you toggle it on, various Google apps and even some third-party apps that support it will turn dark.

Smart Reply

With Smart Reply, notifications will automatically provide a set of replies or actions that’s related to your messages. So, if a friend asks you out to dinner, your phone will suggest you text “👍🏻”.

Other stuff

Live Caption is an accessibility feature that will automatically caption any audio on your device in real-time, including videos, podcasts, and more. Better privacy controls allow you to set apps that request your location to only allow access while in use rather than always allow. Google Play system updates send faster security and privacy fixes to your device without waiting on a security patch or full OS update.

There’s a lot more new stuff than we can cover here, but if you want to know everything that’s new, you can check out the Android 10 page here.

The update, which includes the September security patch, is rolling out to all Pixel phones already, and it’ll come to other Android devices in the coming months.
