Gboard is getting smart replies for notifications

You’ve probably heard of Google’s Smart Reply app that brings Allo’s smart reply feature to other messaging applications. Now, Google is bringing this functionality to its own keyboard app, Gboard.

Like the Smart Reply app, this works only in the notification and not in the app itself. However, it doesn’t support a wide range of apps like Smart Reply does. It currently only supports:

  • Android Messages
  • Facebook Messenger (including the Lite version)
  • Google Allo
  • Google Hangouts
  • Snapchat
  • WhatsApp
  • WeChat

How it works

When you receive a notification from an app that has a quick reply box, you’ll find a suggestion to enable the smart reply feature. It will then ask you to grant the notification access permission.

After that, whenever you use the quick reply box on a supported app, you’ll get smart replies in the auto-complete bar.

This is still in the development phase, but we should be expecting it soon.
