Three things that Google needs for a successful Pixel Watch

AI + Software + Hardware. It’s the glue that made the Pixel phones successful. Will it do the same for a Pixel smartwatch? Rumors about a Pixel watch from Google have been around for quite some time, but rarely do you hear about what a Google-branded smartwatch needs to be a true Apple Watch competitor.

Apple is currently leading the entire smartwatch marketplace, but here are a few things that a Pixel watch needs to show there’s more to offer.

Smart AI health features

Google’s smartwatch operating system, Wear OS, already has some pretty neat features within the Google Fit app. Workouts, for the most part, are recognizable by way of the accelerometer. However, to take it one step further, the Pixel watch needs to do things to make my life healthier. Provide us with relevant information or experiences based off of the insurmountable data that Google has on us.

Wear OS needs a software facelift

Since the beginning of Android Wear, now Wear OS, Google focused on smartwatches as a glanceable device—a device that isn’t supposed to get much use other than quick notifications and response. Since its initial birth, app makers have added features to prove that a smartwatch is a bonafide platform. Unlike Apple’s watchOS, Wear OS hasn’t adjusted. Google needs to do something to extend battery life and add unique features that’ll make consumers truly want to buy this thing.

A hardware design that impresses

The hardware has to be fashionably beautiful for all wrists. Google has already partnered with numerous fashionable brands from TAG Heuer, Fossil, Michael Kors, and Skagen Denmark. With the experience they have received, Google should recognize that their customers want something that is stylish, but also approachable. I’m still one of the few that don’t like the style of the Apple Watch. I’ve recently purchased the Skagen Falster smartwatch and it’s gorgeous. Google needs to make a premium design, a sporty design, and one that is in between.

All three of these things have to line up perfectly for this to work. If not, time may continue to stand still with Google’s smartwatch platform, leaving Apple to be Cronus in the smartwatch space.
