Google Duo v38 adds Material Theme, silently removes screen sharing once and for all

Recently, Google rolled out an update to both its Phone and Contacts apps, adding Material Theme. Now, it’s time for Google Duo to get its treatment, though it is not entirely about the looks this time around.

As expected, the new update brings some slight tweaks to the ongoing Material Theme. The app now has a darker shade of blue, the navigation bar is now tinted white, and the search bar is now rectangular with rounded corners instead of resembling a pill shape.

Obviously, there hasn’t been that much changed design-wise. However, the same can’t be said about the app’s functionality. This update may be the final nail in the coffin for Screen Sharing. True, this feature didn’t enjoy the most successful debut in earlier versions, but I’m still not sure whether it was that much of a headache for Google to remove it altogether now.

Other changes include the omission of the ‘Vibrate while ringing’ toggle, and the addition of referral rewards in the form of free data credit and free ‘real money’ through Tez—one of the most popular payment services tailored specifically for India.

Like all previous updates to any of Google’s apps, the update is rolling out in the Play Store in stages, so you might have to wait for a few days before it hits your device, or, of course, APK Mirror has it as well.
