You can now buy Google’s Titan security key on the Google Store

Today, Google just made its Titan security key available on the Google Store for $50. Now, instead of sending a two-factor authentication code (explained here) to your phone, you can use the security key when logging into Google, Facebook, Twitter, and other sites that support it.

These security keys are a stronger form of protection for your accounts. After entering the sign in details while logging into a site, you can press a button on the security key which is physically plugged into the device or connected via Bluetooth. It makes it harder for a hacker to break into your account since he’ll need the security key for two-factor authentication.

If you buy the security key bundle from Google, you’ll get two keys. One is a teardrop-shaped fob that’s meant to be carried at all times. It has Bluetooth low energy, USB, and NFC. NFC, however, won’t be usable on Android until later this year. The second is key-shaped and is meant to be kept in a safe place. It has USB-A and NFC.

Google stores the key’s firmware in a secure element that can’t be modified. Therefore, it can prevent anyone from extracting private data in the key. While you do get two keys, losing them is a downside. Google will help you gain access to your account again, but the recovery process can take days.
