[Update: More information] Snapdragon 855 coming with a dedicated NPU and possibly a new name

AI is becoming increasingly popular. It spans from companies like Asus going crazy on the word for marketing to Google integrating it with every single product. With all the use of AI, the most popular SoC maker, Qualcomm, had to equip native support for it on their SoCs. That’s what it’s doing with the upcoming Snapdragon 855.

Update 10/10, 9:20 PM/CT: More information about the CPU itself.

Qualcomm is going to introduce the Snapdragon 855, the successor to the 845, at the annual tech summit in Hawaii. Qualcomm has been developing the chip under the codename “SM8150” which leads us to believe that the processor will be called the Snapdragon 8150.

That’s something we can’t say for sure, however. The Snapdragon 835 was developed internally with the codename “MSM8998” whereas the Snapdragon 845 was codenamed “SDM845.” It’s possible that they’ve just changed the codenaming scheme again.

The SoC will not come with 5G support, though. Instead, it’ll come with an upgraded X24 modem that supports Cat.20 LTE in order to reach 2Gbps download speeds.

The NPU

First, it’s going to be Qualcomm’s first SoC to be built on the 7nm process. That’s up to 40% power reduction or 37% or more increase in performance over their 10nm process. It’ll also include an NPU (Neural Processing Unit) for all AI-related tasks. Since it’ll be optimized for AI-related tasks, it’ll give better AI performance too.

Update 10/10, 9:20 PM/CT: The processor will sport an octa-core setup with four low-end cores and four high-end cores. Qualcomm’s going to call the low-end cores “silver” cores and they would have a clock speed of 1.7 GHz. The high-performance cores are going to be called “gold” cores and would have a clock speed of 2.6 GHz.
