Google Photos will get a new express backup mode to limit data usage

Google Photos can store all your photos in full resolution in the cloud. It can end up using a lot of data if you’re not careful, though. Currently, it lets you pick between two backup modes: original quality and high quality. However, for Indian users, Google will roll out a new backup mode called “express.”

It will store the photos and videos at reduced file sizes—3 megapixels for photos and standard definition (480p) for videos. Not the greatest, but you’ll at least have something just in case you lose them. Backups will be faster and not use as much data.

Google will also roll out a setting to choose how much mobile data is used to back files up on cellular data. You can set it to none, 5MB, 10MB, 30MB, or unlimited.

These features will be rolled out to a small percentage of users in India first. Google’s also mentioned that it will look to bring it to other markets once the rollout in India is completed.
