Chrome v70 adds biometric authentication and more

Google Chrome remains to be one of the most used browsers across all devices, and with the recent updates to Chrome, its appeal has increased. Now, additional features are being added in the latest update, v70.

According to a Chromium blog post, Chrome 70 has an update to the Web Authentication API. The Web Authentication API is a credential management API built into the browser which allows the user to securely register and authenticate their accounts with web applications using a different authentication method other than the typical password. This feature was already available for Desktop platforms since v67. However, with v70 this is now available on Android devices as well.

Now, with the latest version of Chrome, whenever you open a website that supports the Web Authentication API, you will be prompted to use your fingerprint for quick authentication.

A Web Authentication prompt.

An additional feature added in v70 is the Shape Detection API, which makes the detection of text, barcodes, and faces using your device on the web possible. According to the Chromium blog post, all of this is done “without the use of a performance-killing library.” This means that you can expect a faster and more efficient experience the next time you are grocery shopping and scanning the products barcodes.

TLS 1.3 is now officially supported with the v70, which will result in a slightly improved loading speed and a more secure browsing experience.
